Idiotic MAchiNe
Choreography: Teo Vlad
Dance: K Id A (Adrian Popa)
Idiotic MAchiNe is an attempt to look deeper at one of todays most discussed topics, MAN versus systematized Matrix Life. In a world in which we are born to become slaves for a man-made system, the question of where is the “I” and how it can be recognized between tons of constructed walls hiding all vulnerability, seems to be of great importance. Especially masculinity is very rarely seen in relationship to emotion and fragility, and far too many men find themselves dealing with suppressed feelings, which lead to intense Frustration and Aggression.
Specifically designed to be performed by the Romanian dancer K Id A, inspired out of his personal story of growing up without a Father and becoming a pillar and role-model for others, this piece aims to break the dancers control over his perfected technique and channel a somehow deeply rooted movement out of his own emotional states. At the border between Contemporary Dance and Butoh, choreographer and dancer emerge into a process of authentic questioning of one owns limitations.
Looking deeply into the personal experience with social systems, Idiotic MAchiNe is a choreographic experiment, which tries to find a structure in which the original style of movement of the dancer can unfold and develop into a deeper form of expression, which he can direct but doesn’t need to control. The result: a contemporary dance of the soul.
How a Robot is affected by the Center energy that moves within the body and how the mind can affect its release was the foundation for the beginning of the rehearsal process. How a man with too many walls can break out into uncontrolled lightness and how self-love can trigger higher levels of perfection is a continuous investigation at the base of this process. Playing with acrobatic dance, contemporary dance improvisation and Butoh techniques the choreographer and the dancer are aiming to find a mixture of styles which best describe their avant-garde nature and both their investigation into the idea of a new dance they call Butemporary. The quest for authenticity and for free expression is the main aim of this piece. Creating a mix of genres is the choreographers aesthetic pursuit, inspired by their previous works in directing film and theatre as well as designing visuals and lights for performances. Idiotic MAchiNe is a new experiment of expanded cinema and dance in the frame of innovative performative process.
The research process has started in September 2018 in Berlin and will continue until March 2019. The piece will premiere with the occasion of the 23nd International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival Stuttgart, yet some work in progress showings are scheduled for January and February in Berlin.
